OUR STORY
It first began with costly utility bills from PG&E. It was solidified when PG&E was found to be negligent and the cause of the Camp Fire in Northern California that took the lives of 84 people. PG&E cannot continue to avoid the consequences of its wrongdoing. One way to hold them accountable is to help as many people as possible secure cheaper power through solar. In California, a power monopoly robs homeowners of any choice in who delivers their power and how much that power costs. The only option for autonomy and cost reduction is solar power.
The decision was made to start a solar company. However, the mission and objective of that company weren’t solidified until research showed that the solar industry needs to do better. Better transparency, better information, and better pricing. Many people in the solar business call it the “old west,” which refers to loose regulation and the ability to prey on people through expensive commission-based pricing systems. It is very common for solar salespeople to brag about monster commissions of five figures or more. Imagine being a homeowner buying solar to realize later that the solar salesperson made $15,000 or $20,000 on the sale. This is not a long-term client-centric business model and is not conducive to a decision made with transparency, clarity, and professionalism.
At 18 Cents, we have concluded that big monopoly utility companies like PG&E need to go, and the slick solar salesperson model that incentivizes preying on homeowners needs to go as well. It is time for the solar industry to be transparent on solar pricing and give homeowners multiple bids from solar companies, big and small. Imagine one low-cost fee structure applied to the base cost of solar with 10+ solar installation companies competing for your business. No salespeople, no ambiguity, and the best pricing from up to 10 different solar companies, all delivered through a best-in-class website. All of this at a straightforward cost structure….base cost of solar with any installer plus our low fee of 18 cents a watt.
